L.J.’s paintings are close-up views of tiny objects, overlooked or discarded in today’s popular culture. Her aim is to prove that once you isolate and magnify small details from these otherwise insignificant objects, they reveal a hidden beauty of minute details. Toys and dolls shine on the canvas and become highly symbolic objects. Locks, an ordinary token of safety– securing one’s property has long been a concern of people throughout the world – convey a sense of oppression when rendered as large items. The gigantic eyes of painted dolls channel madness and fear rather than playful and tender playground memories. The mere act of enlarging these items to thousands of times their natural size and rendering all of the details in paint creates a distinctly absurd sense of both comedy and uneasiness.
