Shape of the Line brings together the work of both emerging and established artists across a variety of media to explore the dynamic nature of the line. With a nod to the current Museum of Modern Art exhibition On Line, the work presented demonstrates how line can be more than a delineation of form: it can be a point in motion, an illusion, and the subject itself. In Matthew Craven’s work, whether painting, collage, or installation, a meticulous line dominates. With precision and wit, his bold color palette, abstract patterns, and totemic motifs take cues from military medals, Masonic rituals, and Native American icons.

Elliott Puckette’s lyrical compositions are characterized by her incised, purposeful lines that evoke the curvature of the body, musical notes, and nineteenth-century adornment. Nathlie Provosty’s fluid abstractions are a balanced placement of shapes in which line “appears.” The illusion of line is contingent upon both sides, subverting the concept of the line as an autonomous object.
