New York, NY. Porter Contemporary is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, There And Back Again celebrating the works of four artists–Jason Bryant, Jessica Charlotte, Jennifer Murray, Johnny Romeo– who will be highlighted at the Aqua Art Fair during Art Basel Miami and open to the public in NY with an artist reception on December 8 (6:30 – 8:30pm) and on display through January 7.
In an information age full of real-time news in social media, figures in the press and monumental movements sweeping the country, we live at a tipping point of self-reflection and portraiture offers a doorway to reflecting on our identities and evaluating what defines us. “The four artists in ‘There and Back Again’ showcase portraiture in non-traditional ways through the use of direct and metaphorical elements in their works and we wanted to offer a broad curation of their work in NY,” says Jessica L. Porter, Founder and Director of Porter Contemporary. Jason Bryant’s paintings explore his fascination with film and skateboarding culture to create mysterious metaphors. Jessica Charlotte travels the hidden regions of the mind where apparitions of strange creatures leave their haunting footprints on her portraits. Jennifer Murray explores themes of gender, sexuality, and sociopolitical power struggles through self-portraiture and allegory and Johnny Romeo paints superheroes as the Greek pop-culture gods of our time.
