Kathryn Markel Fine Arts Announces Stephen Pentak: Nearly Opposite
On view January 5 – February 4th, 2012
Artists Reception: Thursday, January 5th, 6-8pm
Kathryn Markel Fine Arts announces its sixth solo exhibition of painter Stephen Pentak entitled, Nearly Opposite. The new work includes paintings of a larger scale and works on paper. Each of these works pushes the tension between presentation and representation.
In the color plain of light and reflection, Pentak envelops the viewer in a world that is both personal and universal. The color passages; some a chromatic sequence, consist of opposition and contrasts evoking a breadth of distilled space. Upon closer inspection, the artist’s signature sweeping strokes created with drywall trowels, plastering tools and palette knives, remove us from the realm of tranquility and return us to the present, reminding us that it is a two dimensional surface. This interplay of contrasts; Nearly Opposite are brought together in unity through light, color, composition and reflection.
Stephen Pentak is Professor Emeritus at Ohio State University where he was Professor and Associate Dean from 1983-2006. He is the author of numerous books including Design Basics published by Cengage. Learning. He exhibits extensively across the United States, from California to New York and internationally including Canada and Israel. His work is in numerous public and private collections including The Columbus Museum of Art, PharmaNet in Princeton NJ and The Wexner Center, Columbus, OH . Stephen Pentak currently lives and works in Stephentown, New York.
