Thursday, March 29 – Thursday, October 4, 2012
Opening Reception: Thursday, March 29, 6-9 pm
Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday, 10 am – 4 pm
Materials for the Arts Gallery presents WasteDiversions: Sculpture and Collage from New York’s Waste Stream, an exhibition of new work by artists from MFTA recipient groups Culture Push and Vaudeville Park, as well as participants in Friends of MFTA’s open studio program. The show, which demonstrates how overlooked and unneeded objects from the waste stream can inspire the City’s artists and makers, features more than 20 works in a range of media found in the MFTA warehouse.
The exhibition includes collages and sculptural assemblages created by teams of artists during Friends of MFTA’s open studio program – a series of monthly workshops that invite the public to engage in collaborative projects with MFTA teaching artists. The show also includes work by artist and MFTA volunteer Sabu, who created playful paper sculptures using only scraps left over from MFTA education workshops. CRT televisions—donated by artist Kevin Cooley, who used them in his 2011 public art project, Remote Nation—are integrated into Static Noise, a large mixed-media installation by Kim Gee and Kevin Stirnweis. Michael DiPietro and Rachel Schragis from Culture Push led the collaborative creation of a quilt fashioned from repurposed materials.
The opening reception for WasteDiversions, Thursday, March 29, from 6-9 pm, will include a multimedia performance piece by Ian M. Colletti of Vaudeville Park. The show, organized by John Kaiser and Nathaniel Shelness, will remain on view at MFTA Gallery from Thursday, March 29 through Thursday, October 4, 2012. The gallery is open to the public weekdays from 10 am to 4 pm and admission is free. Guided tours of the exhibition and the MFTA facility can be arranged through the Education Center at MFTA by calling 718-729-2165 or emailing education@mfta.nyc.gov.
