From Hendrix To Ballet-Meets-Hip-Hop, Downtown Brooklyn’s Public Spaces Become Performance Venues Fridays In June
Free showcase of district’s diverse cultural offerings
For the first time, a cross section of Downtown Brooklyn’s diverse arts and cultural groups will be featured in a free, weekly performing arts series presented by the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and the Downtown Brooklyn Arts Alliance. Nine acts will make Albee Square on Fulton Mall and Renaissance Plaza next to the Marriott Hotel their stage Friday afternoons in June. The outdoor series includes music, theater, spoken word, and dance.

Location: Renaissance Plaza
Performance that explores multiple narratives telling the same story and how audience perceptions change.
Friday, June 15: BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn presents: Nation Beat
Location: Albee Square
Fusing Brazilian and Gulf Coast musical traditions, Brooklyn’s own Nation Beat will rock the stage with their bold and colorful sounds.
Friday, June 22: Mark Morris Dance Group’s Student Company
Location: Albee Square
A presentation of “Mermaid,” a fun and quirky new work choreographed by John Heginbotham set to John Harbison’s Gatsby Etudes.
Friday, June 22: White Bird Productions
Location: Renaissance Plaza
Dedicated for over 20 years to exploring the urban environment, Whitebird Productions presents an original piece by its resident young theater company, Rudy’s. Traverse: An Ode to a Commuter Thoroughfare is a site-specific piece developed for Renaissance Plaza. You’re late for your subway, court date, meeting, or school. So don’t stop, until we stop you.

ActNow’s “Artist on the Square” will include Improv Theater, Music, and Spoken Word performances from local emerging artists.
Friday, June 29: ISSUE Project Room Presents: Michelle Amador
Location: Renaissance Plaza
Michelle Amador is a Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter dedicated to and inspired by the transformational nature of voice and song. Often using repeated phrases and minor changes in vocal intonation and rhythm in a seemingly standard song format, her performances invite the listener to observe time, words, intention and relationship to one another.
