Mighty Tanaka presents:
DON’T MAKE ME count to three!
A solo installation by Nathan Vincent
Power structures exist all around us and influence every level of society. Because of this, roles have been established and appointed, creating a modern caste system which envelopes the culture in which we live. As an ever changing system of rewards and punishments has been implemented, the ruling elite keep a proverbial carrot on a stick, forever luring the disenfranchised to obedience and passivity. Throughout history, the benefactors of these frameworks have used tools to reinforce this control, as weapons have become the most iconic interpretation of power and intimidation. Mighty Tanaka is excited to bring you our next show, DON’T MAKE ME count to three!, an installation by Nathan Vincent, which explores the juxtaposition between the traditional roles of society that have been passed down through the generations and the fear of consequences when stepping out of line.
DON’T MAKE ME count to three! references an authoritative form of power and relationships while invoking the repercussions of disobedience. According to the artist, Nathan Vincent:
“We tacitly enter into these societal agreements and fall into power structures without consideration of whether it is truly in our best interest. It’s not until you question those structures that you realize the consequences of disobedience can sometimes be ridiculously insignificant.”
Nathan Vincent has created an accumulative installation featuring an assortment of fiber-made “explosives”; virtual weaponry crocheted by hand that represents the confines of society and our ability to break out of the mold.
