‘New York Under Glass’
Ivy Brown Gallery will show the work of East Village artist Joseph Cavalieri. Fifteen new works will be on display with a theme expressing New York landmarks in atypical settings. Personalities seen in the art include San Gennaro, Jackie O, Helen Hayes (above), and a young Ulysses S. Grant. Buildings seen in the works include the Flat Iron building and the Dakota. Cavalieri places these images in unexpected, curious settings. He describes the work as “collages in glass.” Cavalieri updates techniques and the storytelling tradition created by medieval stained glass artisans. Each of his works incorporates a detailed narrative, often with humor. The stories are based on personal occurrences of Joseph’s 35 years living in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Joseph Cavalieri is an award winning native New York artist and educator. This is his second solo exhibition with the Ivy Brown Galley, the first was at the Out Hotel in Times Square. Joseph’s work can be seen in the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Design, the Italian American Museum, the Leslie-Lohman Museum, and the Stax Museum. Cavalieri has produced private and public art commissions including a MTA Arts for Transit public art installation at the Philipse Manor Train Station in Westchester, New York. Cavalieri’s aim is to merge contemporary imagery with the time-honored processes of painted stained glass, a material with a powerful spiritual history. This technique was originally created by Medieval stained glass artists, and uses enamel paints which are made of ground glass, metals and pigment. These paints are applied to the glass surface then kiln fired at a temperature of 1300 degrees Fahrenheit (700 degrees Celsius). Once cooled, paints of different colors are added and the work is refired. Cavalieri updates this historic process by incorporating silk screening and airbrushing techniques. Joseph’s final art is set into wall hung light boxes with internal LED lighting. http://www.cavaglass.com/
