“In her radiant paintings, Kikuko Morimoto aims to capture the essence of color. Not only the essence of the colors she sees but also the ones she experiences. Her imagination can be triggered by myriad signage in the city, clothes people wear on the street or the reflection from someone’s phone screen on the subway. Sometimes she dreams up a whole painting while she’s sleeping and sometimes colors come to her during her daily meditation practice.
Morimoto’s process involves ripping pieces of paper, painting them separately and then combining them. She treats the stretched canvas merely as a tool to hang her colors on the wall. If there were another way to experience paintings, she would prefer to have them floating around – like colorful clouds up in the air. Hence the corporeal quality of her paintings, each layer in a perpetual attempt at jumping out of the surface of the canvas and coming to its own.” – Hande Oynar
