“Saints, Sinners, and Lovers” is a multimedia showcase focused on the concepts of religious iconography, and our unique relationships as queer artists with religion and spirituality.
In the Voodoo shops of New Orleans, altars are littered with the offerings and tributes of visitors. Believers leave small items–cigarettes, pennies, writing, lipstick cases, crystals, crucifixes. These items might represent a prayer, a wish, or a desire to be connected with the divine and spiritual. There is something about these icons and altars which prompts even the most skeptical to fascination. As opposed to a traditional gallery, we would like to encourage visitors to commune directly with the art and present the show as an installation piece. Some ideas for this installation include:
-decorating with candles, golden streamers, mirrors, glass, and scripture
-handmade votive candles for visitors to light, or purchase as a souvenir
-a “confessional” area for taking & leaving selfies
-and “altar” spaces at which visitors could leave offerings and reflect on the art
We are interested in exploring the variant relationships with all religions and forms of spirituality.
The show is April 23rd from 8-12, at The Living Gallery, 1094 Broadway Brooklyn NY 11221
Installation is 6-8, breakdown is 12-1. You must be installed by 8pm, so we suggest arriving as early as you can!
