Hidetake Miyadate will exhibit his newest series of paintings beginning August 7.
Miyadate’s latest artworks feature the sky as a major concept, inspired by his surroundings growing up. He was born into a family of the chief priest of a Shinto shrine, and Shinto was deeply embedded in his upbringing. The honoring of Shinto spirits, or kami, is at the heart of Shinto and much of Miyadate’s work. Kami are held close to humans and associated with landscapes, forces of nature, and ancestors, and kami as a concept alludes to the sacred element of things.
When rice farming took hold as a way of life in Japan, people would often pray for rain. Miyadate seeks to express this harmony of spirits in his paintings, and his focus on the sky alludes to the honoring of kami associated with rain and agriculture. Bridging traditional Japanese art with modern techniques, Miyadate’s works pay homage to Shintoism’s deep awareness of and appreciation for the natural world and its inherent, awe-inspiring elements.
