‘The Synanthrope Preserve: The Washing Bear’ invites visitors to discover the urban wildlife of Central Park. A 35-minute audio experience takes listeners on a winding tour to discover and observe both natural and manmade features that are often overlooked or invisible during the day. Throughout the walk, listeners will explore the perceptions and realities of nature in cities, focusing in on the story of raccoons, in particular. The audio explores how raccoon nature has adapted and changed as a result of their relationship with humans. The listeners’ movement is choreographed through sounds and narration to create an immersive psychological landscape.

The Synanthrope Preserve is a body of work presented by Gal Nissim and Jessica Scott-Dutcher, as a series of immersive audio tours that take place throughout New York City. Each walk focuses on a different synanthropic animal, that lives and thrives close to us, such as – pigeons, raccoons, and rats.
