SurveillAnts is an interactive art installation tracking the behaviors of a colony of live ants, visualizing their patterns over time. It is a visual exploration of collective intelligence and a metaphorical search for a biological algorithm that governs collective action.
Only the collective colony produces the behavior needed for survival. Somewhere between the individual and the collective, there emerges the will to live. SurveillAnts uses surveillance technology to transform the ant paths to colorful drawings. Viewers are invited to explore these paths over time and to try and find a rationale for the patterns that emerge. This project is a collaboration between science artist and Media Center fellow Gal Nissim and designer Leslie Ruckman.
