Magenta Plains is pleased to present Earthly Coil, a group exhibition that centers around the projection of meaning and memory in relation to instinct, opening March 6 through April 10.
The multidisciplinary exhibition includes painting, drawing and sculptures using Hamlet’s soliloquy and Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ as the show’s conceptual anchor.
Featuring new works from Brook Hsu, Nikholis Planck, Liza Lacroix, Nazim Ünal Yilmaz, and Heidi Lau, the artists transcend topics of consciousness and unconsciousness, and emotion through observations of both the physical world and their own interior psychologies.
Brook Hsu’s paintings vacillate between abstraction and figuration throughout forms that exists between the material and ethereal realms. Nikholis Plank’s shaped canvases are a result of his self-referential approach in which he repurposes and up-cycles his own works to produce paintings anew. Liza Lacroix’s large scale oil paintings invoke a theatrical sense alluding to narratives which can can only be recognized by the emotions that they imply. Nazim Ünal Yilmaz consciously invites viewers to participate in the decoding of the painting to free the viewer from their usual roles of passive spectators. Fragmenting personal and collective memories alike, Heidi Lau makes collections of symbolic artifacts and zoomorphic ruins based on her Taoist upbringing to explore contemporary conditions such as transcendent homelessness, displacement and nostalgia.
