One Art Space Gallery presents Erika Hibbert’s newest body of work produced over the past 12 months. The exhibition offers a compelling view of her extensive series of portraits in ink on waterproof paper. Her subjects range from imagined people to loved ones, strangers, public figures, and revered artists. The artist limited herself to two recurring small and large formats, with a standard composition comprised of a single head floating in an abstract arena of space patterned with textures and lines. Within these tight peripheries, the variety and distinct personality of each portrait are all the more startling. Collectively, the faces form part of a whole that lulls with its repetitive rhythm. Up close, each face explores a unique individual. The parts, rendered with intricate particularities and captivating intimacy, are much more than the whole.

Erika Hibbert was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and has been exhibiting her work for the past 30 years. Initially residing in Johannesburg, she exhibited locally as well as in Botswana and Czechia before relocating to the United States where she has been living, working, and exhibiting since 2009. Hibbert is represented in major South African art collections, as well as in public and private collections worldwide.
