Jessica Alazraki: Like Water for Chocolate
Exhibition dates: October 16, 2023–November 16, 2023
Opening reception: Thursday October 19, 2023, 5–7pm
The Macy Art Gallery presents an exhibition of Jessica Alazraki’s portrait series titled “Like Water for Chocolate.” Born in Mexico City and now based in New York, Alazraki has rendered skillful works that reflect her technical and emotional engagement with narratives that pull the viewer into intimate spaces that may feel simultaneously foreign and instantly familiar. The sense of community and tradition transcends the specifics even while keeping them as the focal point.
From the show’s curator, Charles Moore, “Inviting us behind closed doors, painter Jessica Alazraki unveils the stories of families and individuals from Latinx and immigrant backgrounds as they partake in acts of the everyday… [H]er stories revel in the sense of happiness, loyalty, and the hope that is embodied by these cultures and the value they add to our collective experience of contemporary life.”
According to Olga Hubard, artist and Director of the Art and Art Education program at Teachers College, Columbia University, “The paintings are spectacular–powerful and joyful.”
