Michael Walden’s latest exhibition at Prince Street Gallery is a vibrant exploration of figuration. His new works illuminate the relationship between an artist and his model. Highlighting the process of observation, this exhibition brings viewers inside Walden’s studio–perhaps even inside the artist’s mind–showing us his focus on the plays of light and color, the tensions between surface and pattern. Like the Bay Area Figurative Artists of the midcentury, Walden explores his subject through the process of abstraction and obfuscation. Walden’s paintings and prints capture the ease of a connection that exists outside of language. They are studies and demonstrations of being.
