Alessandro Berni Gallery presents Suspended She: Inner Tensions, a solo exhibition by Romanian artist Ribana Szutor. The show opens with a public reception on Thursday, May 21, 2026 from 6–8 pm at 511 West 25th Street in Chelsea, and remains on view through May 31, 2026.

Suspended She: Inner Tensions constructs a visual environment that resists immediate passage. A female presence appears only intermittently, emerging from undefined space before dissolving back into abstraction. The figure is not the subject. Tension is. A contained force moves between body and surface, sometimes visible, sometimes fully absorbed into the paint.

Szutor’s canvases unfold through subtle, layered textures that evoke what the artist describes as an inner cartography. These are not landscapes to be recognized but territories to be felt. Color functions as a living, luminous material, building depth and rhythm through tonal variation and surface vibration, generating continuous movement in which form never fully settles. The result is painting that does not describe a place so much as behave like a state.

The exhibition is conceived as an environment of suspended intensity, where abstraction and figuration exist in unresolved tension. Szutor’s surfaces suggest the topography of a fractured inner map, an emotional geography observed from above, in constant transformation. Suspended She is not a figure to be decoded. It is a condition to be crossed.

Compact in its run but strong in its ambition, the exhibition marks a significant New York presentation for Szutor, whose layered, psychologically charged canvases reward sustained attention.
