Carol Bove’s First Museum Survey Fills the Guggenheim’s Rotunda on the Upper East Side Through August 2

Carol Bove, the first museum survey and largest exhibition to date of the work of American sculptor Carol Bove, is on view through August 2, 2026, at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 1071 Fifth Avenue, on the Upper East Side. Opened March 5, the exhibition transforms the entirety of Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic spiral rotunda, bringing together more than 100 works spanning over 25 years of the artist’s practice alongside two new bodies of work created for the presentation.

The exhibition is organized in a loose reverse chronology, winding backwards through Bove’s career as visitors ascend the ramp — from monumental new steel “collage sculptures” on the lower levels to the delicate bead, feather, and thread assemblages of her early 2000s work at the top. Six polished aluminum disks rise through the rotunda in a vertical column, originally commissioned for the nearby Metropolitan Museum of Art’s facade in 2021, here reactivating Wright’s geometries by drawing the eye toward the skylight. Among the show’s most striking gestures, Bove reveals a site-specific mural by Joan Miró and Josep Llorens Artigas from 1965–67, built into the Guggenheim’s first bay and unseen for more than 23 years, through a diamond-shaped cutout she has cut into the wall. Works by Bruce Conner, Agnes Martin, and Édouard Vuillard appear alongside Bove’s own, reflecting her deep engagement with art-historical research. Exhibition paint — 40 custom shades — was developed in collaboration with Farrow & Ball; exhibition fabric by Kvadrat. Bove has also integrated rest and play into the visitor experience, with seating built into the architecture, a tactile studio library, and artist-designed chess sets on the rotunda floor.

Carol Bove was born in Geneva in 1971 and raised in Berkeley, California. She earned a BS from New York University in 2000 and has lived and worked in New York since 1992. Her work has been the subject of solo presentations at the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, The High Line, the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, and the Blanton Museum of Art, and has appeared in group exhibitions at Documenta, Tate Britain, Tate St Ives, the Whitney Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among many others. She is represented by Gagosian. The exhibition is curated by Katherine Brinson, Daskalopoulos Senior Curator of Contemporary Art and Director of Global Initiatives, who describes it as placing Bove’s early and recent bodies of work in “generative dialogue” while cohering into “a single artistic statement, animating the Frank Lloyd Wright spiral with color and form.”

With its reverse chronology, participatory design, and the revelation of a hidden mural, Carol Bove makes the case that a survey exhibition can be as formally inventive as the practice it documents.
