WHAT IS THE SUMMER EXHIBITION?
Our annual Summer Exhibition is up from May 12 through September 22 and open to the public every weekend (including the weekend of our Summer Festival). The exhibition includes the work of roughly 50 emerging artists who have either participated in the Wassaic Artist Residency Program or have applied through our Open Call. The exhibition is housed in Maxon Mills, an historic grain elevator in the heart of Wassaic. View images of our 2017 Summer Exhibition here.
WHAT IS THE SUMMER FESTIVAL PROGRAM?
We curate a program of performance and temporary installation for our Summer Festival, the first Saturday in August — August 4, 2018. The Wassaic Project Summer Festival is a free, annual celebration of art, music, dance, and community, and attracts thousands of visitors a year.
DO I NEED TO APPLY IF I WAS A WASSAIC RESIDENT IN THE PAST YEAR?
Yes, you submit a proposal using the online form and pay no submission fee. Residents from the past year (2017 plus November and December 2016) receive preferred consideration during the Exhibition and Festival selection process.
WHAT KIND OF WORK ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
In our exhibition we show all mediums, including: 2d work, sculpture, video, new media and installation. For our Summer Festival, we curate performance pieces and temporary installations. There is no specific genre we are looking for. The Maxon Mills, the Luther Barn, and the surrounding areas are unique and inspiring spaces conducive to site specific installations and performances. Be as specific as you are able in your proposal as to how your work might integrate into our space. Please show relevant work and tell us how it relates to your proposed installation. Our festival also includes film screenings, dance performances and live music.
CAN I DO AN INSTALLATION OUTDOORS?
Yes! We curate outdoor installations for our Summer Festival program and Summer Exhibition. You can propose an outdoor or festival-only installation using the application above. Be sure to include any available documentation of similar installations you have made.
CAN I DO A PERFORMANCE?
Yes! We curate a series of performances for our Summer Festival, the first Saturday in August. You can propose a performance using the application above. Be sure to include any available documentation of similar performances you have done.
IS IT NECESSARY TO VISIT WASSAIC BEFORE I SUBMIT WORK?
Artists submitting proposals for site-specific installations and performances are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with our spaces and submit proposals accordingly. Preference is given to artists who consider our space in their proposals. Accepted artists will be able to arrange site visits during the spring to work out the details of their proposal. Accepted artists making site-specific installations are required to do a site visit before installing and check in with the Wassaic Co-Directors during install.
WHY IS THERE A SUBMISSION FEE?
It is a full-time job curating our Summer Programming and we need to pay our staff. We try to keep the submission fee as low as possible so it isn’t a deterrent to submitting work. If you have financial hardship, please email eve@wassaicproject.org. If you are a 2017 or November/December 2016 resident, please email jenny@wassaicproject.org to have the submission fee waived.
HOW MUCH COMMISSION DOES THE WASSAIC PROJECT TAKE FROM SOLD WORKS?
The Wassaic Project takes 50% on all work sold at the Wassaic Project.
WHAT DOES THE SUMMER EXHIBITION SPACE LOOK LIKE?
The exhibition is housed in Maxon Mills, an historic grain elevator in the heart of Wassaic. The Maxon Mills is not a traditional gallery space, so it presents unique challenges and opportunities when installing artwork including dust and humidity. We have created this guide to help artists prepare for install and adapt their work to the environment of the mill if necessary.
AM I REQUIRED TO INSTALL MY OWN PIECE?
Artists are responsible for the installation of their own work during the designated install period. If you are unable to install your piece yourself or you require special circumstances, time or equipment, please state them in your proposal and we will try to accommodate your needs. Artists must be responsible for their own work.
WHEN IS INSTALL?
For the Summer Exhibition – Saturday, April 28. The Maxon Mills is open from 10am until 5pm on installation day. Works MUST be installed by the end of the day. All 2D works should be dropped off on the morning of April 28, to be installed by a professional art handler.
For the Summer Festival, install dates are Monday, July 23 – Thursday, July 26. Works MUST be installed by the end of the day on Thursday, July 26.
WHAT IF I NEED AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME TO INSTALL?
If you need more time to do a more involved installation, please explain your installation process in your proposal and we can work out an alternate schedule. If your installation takes place over multiple days, you are invited to camp for free on our campgrounds during your install period, or potentially stay in one of our residency houses during the last two weeks in April, depending on availability. The campground is equipped with clean running water (hose), port-o-potties, and garbage cans. There is also a lovely stream nearby for taking a dip. The residency houses are well-equipped with beds and linens, kitchen supplies, etc., but you will need to bring your own towels.
HOW CAN I GET MY WORK UP TO THE SHOW?
Artists are responsible for getting their work to and from the Wassaic Project. Work may be delivered in the following ways: 1) Bring your piece up with you during the install period on the train or by car or carpool with other artists. 2) You may mail your piece to The Wassaic Project, if you make arrangements beforehand. Please state if you will need to mail your piece, whether you need someone else to install it, and why in your proposal and we will try to accommodate you. Please note that you will be responsible for the cost of shipping your work to and from Wassaic.
HOW DO I GET UP TO WASSAIC?
The Wassaic Project is accessible by Car and Metro North Railroad. Directions to the site are listed HERE.
DO I NEED A CAR DURING INSTALL?
It is not necessary to have a car during install, although it makes things easier especially if your installation will take place over multiple days. If you do not have a car, we recommend that you plan carefully and bring all the things you will need to install your work.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO INSTALL?
Everything you need to install your work including: art, hardware, tools. Basic lighting is provided, though if you have special requirements, you should bring what you need to best light your work.
CAN I STORE THE MATERIALS I USED TO PACK AND TRANSPORT MY WORK IN WASSAIC?
We can potentially store your cardboard, boxes or other packing materials until de-install, depending on size/quantity and as long as they are clearly labeled with your name.
AM I REQUIRED TO ATTEND THE FESTIVAL?
The Wassaic Project Summer Festival is a community event and we feel that it is important for our artists to make it a priority to be a part of our community. To that end, we give preference to artists who will attend either the festival or the exhibition opening (May 12, 2018). If you are unable to attend either, please state the reason in your proposal.
ARE ARTISTS REQUIRED TO VOLUNTEER FOR THE FESTIVAL?
No. In fact, we encourage Artists NOT to volunteer so they have maximum time to meet other artists, buyers, performers, and RELAX. Please do send us your friends to volunteer! Interested in volunteers should email jenny@wassaicproject.org.
WHEN IS DE-INSTALL?
De-install will be on Sunday, September 23 from 10a-5p. All artists who are capable of de-installing and taking their work with them on the 23rd are highly encouraged to do so–artists unavailable on that date or who will require a longer de-installation window should indicate that in their proposal.
HOW DO WE GET OUR WORK BACK?
Work is to be picked up during the de-install period. The artist is responsible for the packaging and picking up of their work, unless you have arranged otherwise beforehand (please state this in your proposal).
