Carter Burden Gallery in Chelsea Seeks Small-Scale Works for Juried Open Call, Deadline August 19

Carter Burden Gallery is accepting submissions for Small Matters, a blindly juried open call open to all visual artists aged 18 and older residing in the United States. Submissions close Wednesday, August 19, 2026, with the exhibition running November 19 through December 16, 2026, at 548 West 28th Street, Suite 534, in Chelsea. An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, November 19, 6 to 8 PM.

The exhibition takes scale as both its constraint and its subject. Two-dimensional works, including the frame, must not exceed 15 inches in any direction; three-dimensional pedestal pieces must measure no more than 10 inches in any direction and weigh under 50 pounds. Up to five works may be submitted per artist. The call is open to all media and all subject matter, with the organizing premise that intimacy of scale need not limit artistic ambition — the gallery’s framing quotes both Arthur Conan Doyle and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream on the power of small things. AI-generated work will not be considered.

Jurors are Beth Barry and Veronica Lawlor, both New York-based artists with strong ties to the Chelsea gallery community. Barry is an abstract painter, collage artist, curator, and psychotherapist whose work has been shown at Carter Burden Gallery, The Painting Center, and internationally, and who holds a curatorial residency from NY Artists Equity Association at Equity Gallery. Lawlor is an illustrator, painter, and educator on the faculties of Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, and the Woodstock School of Art, known for her reportage drawing practice and work exhibited at the United Nations, Mystic Seaport Museum, and the Society of Illustrators. Applications are submitted through CaFÉ; the entry fee is $45 for up to five works. Carter Burden Gallery takes no commission on sales.

With an accessible entry fee, a no-commission sales policy, and jurors drawn from New York’s working artist community, Small Matters makes a strong case that the most artist-forward opportunities in the city are sometimes the smallest ones.
