Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning, Inc. (JCAL) invites Queens County artists to apply to participate in our newly initiated professional development program, Artists Residency &Training Workshop Series (ARTWorks, Inc.) Program. It teaches visual artists to regard their work as a small business, identify their entrepreneurial and professional goals and create a long-term plan for accomplishing them.

Up to twelve artists will be selected to participate in this ten-month seminar series, with topics including financial management, grant seeking, filing taxes as an artist, and self-promotion and networking. Two of the selected artists will be awarded Workspace Fellowships consisting of a $10,000 stipend, mentorship, free workspace for ten months, and free admission to the seminar series. The ten artists not awarded a fellowship will be expected to pay a nominal fee of $100 in order to demonstrate their commitment to the program and will be expected to attend the seminar series. All selected artists will be eligible to include their work in a group show in June 2019, for which they will receive a stipend of $600.

Program Timeline: Applications are due May 30, 2018. Selections will be made by the mid-June 2018 and the seminar series will be held from September 2018 through the first week of May 2019. Classes will meet once or twice a month, and will be held on Saturdays.

Eligibility: Eligible artists must be a resident in the New York Metropolitan area (priority will be given to Queens County residents of underrepresented communities) under the age of thirty-five at the time of application, and must have received their most recent degree within the past three to five years. Students currently enrolled in a BFA/MFA program are only eligible if they will graduate by the end of December 2018. Self-taught artists that can demonstrate that they have been creating work for at least 5-8 years can also apply.

Selection Criteria: Artists will be selected on the basis of the strength of their work. Preference will be given to artists who have not received significant exposure in the form of exhibitions, grants, residencies, or are a member of the underrepresented communities of Queens County. We encourage applications from people of color, women, and other under-represented artists to apply. Fellowships will be awarded to those who, in addition to meeting the above criteria, in particular, we would encourage the fellowship artists to demonstrate a strong interest of social practice in any forms that will engagement the public and address the social progress today.
