Mary Salstrom’s “Sunlight and Space” on View at Prince Street Gallery Through May 16

Prince Street Gallery presents Sunlight and Space: Summer Landscapes of Sweden and Illinois, an exhibition of recent oil paintings on canvas and oil pastels on paper by Mary Salstrom. The show is on view through May 16, 2026 at the gallery’s Chelsea location, 547 West 27th Street.

Sunlight and Space explores the particular quality of light across two geographically distant but thematically connected landscapes: the Rock River Valley of rural Illinois and the lakes, gardens, and building surfaces of southern Sweden. Salstrom’s compositions are formed in natural light, with color serving as the primary vehicle for capturing the sensory experience of sunlit space. Her sites are chosen where rural architecture and occasional figures introduce a sense of human warmth into expansive outdoor scenes.

The exhibition draws from both imagination and memory, with many works painted in situ and larger studio pieces developed from smaller on-site studies. The extended daylight of a Swedish summer lends a distinct luminosity to the Scandinavian works, while the Illinois paintings carry the full, saturated warmth of a midwestern summer afternoon. Together, the two bodies of work trace a shared visual inquiry into how sunlight shapes our perception of place.

Salstrom’s approach is quietly observational and deeply felt, locating the extraordinary in the rhythms of rural life and seasonal light. Sunlight and Space is an unhurried exhibition that rewards close looking.
