Fred Tomaselli’s “Blooms Disrupted” on View at James Cohan in Tribeca

James Cohan presents Blooms Disrupted, an exhibition of new and recent work by Fred Tomaselli. The show opened with a reception on Friday, May 15, 2026 and remains on view through June 26, 2026 at the gallery’s 48 Walker Street location in Tribeca. This is Tomaselli’s seventh solo exhibition with James Cohan.

For over forty years, Tomaselli has invoked the power of nature through maximalist paintings and works on paper, fusing organic matter, photographic reproductions, and dense ornamentation into surfaces that seem to pulse with their own internal light. In Blooms Disrupted, the garden takes center stage, used to consider the natural world as a counterweight to the urgent rush of news and media. Inspired by visits to Robert Irwin’s gardens at the Getty in Los Angeles and informed by his own history as an urban gardener, Tomaselli renders nature not as backdrop but as immersive event, advocating for preservation and communal care.

The exhibition brings together new resin paintings and an extended series of New York Times collages. The paintings present botanical worlds of kaleidoscopic detail where flowers reveal themselves as collages and vines snake through resin surfaces. The Times collages extend Tomaselli’s long practice of disrupting the front page with gouache and found imagery, replacing dominant headlines with stories about nature, climate change, and political strife.

The two bodies of work converge in Month of August (evening) (2026), in which a geometric spiral of August 2025 headlines radiates outward over a Mexican sunflower, holding the ceaseless weight of the news against the quiet persistence of a growing thing. Blooms Disrupted is a timely and visually arresting exhibition from one of contemporary art’s most distinctive voices.
