Pictor Gallery Opens Unbearable Lightness, an Invitational and Members Show, in Chelsea Through August 15
Pictor Gallery presents Unbearable Lightness, an invitational and members exhibition on view in Galleries 1 and 2 at 547 West 27th Street in Chelsea. The exhibition opens July 21, 2026 and runs through August 15, 2026, with an opening reception on Thursday, July 23, 6 to 8 PM.
The exhibition takes as its subject the hidden effort beneath apparent ease — the softness that is demanded rather than chosen, the smile that conceals labor, the grace that is itself a form of work. Arriving at the height of summer, when lightness feels most expected and least easy to sustain, Unbearable Lightness looks closely at what is often overlooked: the effort it takes to make something seem effortless. Works across the show span a wide range of styles and media, brought together by member and guest artists whose practices engage — directly or obliquely — with the weight that ease requires.
Pictor Gallery is an artist-owned and run cooperative in the Landmark Arts Building in Chelsea, founded with a mission to encourage and promote the creative efforts of painters, sculptors, and other visual artists. Member artists from New York and around the country bring a diversity of ideas together to curate collective and collaborative exhibitions and engage the art-seeking public in meaningful conversation. Exhibitions are paired with salon events and live programming to offer a gallery experience that is, in the gallery’s own words, fresh, unique, and inclusive.
With nearly sixty artists across two galleries, Unbearable Lightness makes the case that summer’s most deceptively easy season is exactly the right moment to look at what effort actually looks like.
